I became aware of the brand MIMIDRE on Instagram (social media for the win!). Its CEO, Ms. Andrea Tomlin, has always been very professional and amicable in our interactions and the products are quality work, which has won me over as a repeat customer. What I love the most about this brand, perhaps, is how well it seems to embody who I hope to be – a person who embraces all of who I am (the brilliant and quirky) and exhibits a style of her own. #flynerd. Supporting this small business helps me do just that! Check it out and SUPPORT! -xo, Ash!
Andrea Mimi Tomlin, Founder and CEO of MIMIDRE
When was Mimidre founded?
It was officially founded last October but it was started once I finished school which was in 2009.
What was your inspiration for starting Mimidre?
My love for fashion and graphic design.
What has been your inspiration to keep Mimidre going?
I am my inspiration to keep it going. I don’t know if that makes sense. MimiDre is almost an extension of myself. It is my way of expressing my perspective on fashion or graphics. I feel as though if I stop I am giving up on myself almost.
What’s been your greatest lesson from entrepreneurship?
My greatest lesson is self-discipline and learning to say no. When you work for yourself no one is telling you or reminding you to get things done, you have to keep track of everything yourself. Sometimes things fall through the cracks. I am always trying to discover the best way for me to streamline my process to be the most productive.
Where do you see Mimidre in ten years?
In ten years, I see MimiDre being a larger operation incorporating other graphic designers and screenprinters. I do everything in house and I hope to keep it that way. Prayerfully, as the business grows our facility will grow with it in order to employ creatives that love the process as much as I do.
What, in your opinion, differentiates your products from others?
The message. Fly Nerd by MimiDre is about embracing what others may deem quirky or weird. It’s about accepting yourself as you are. People connect with that message.
What is the best piece of advice you have received on your entrepreneurial journey?
There is space for everyone. That God has gifted each of us with our own talents and visions. In knowing that, you don’t worry about competition or missing out on opportunities. You rest in knowing that God has a journey for each of us and none of those journeys look exactly the same. We can all exist in the same space because each of us brings a different talent and perspective to the table.
What has been the hardest lesson you have learned on your entrepreneurial journey?
The hardest thing I had to learn was how to protect my vision. Not necessarily because others might steal it but more so that others will try to change it. So many people have opinions on what you are doing and how you should do it. Some of those opinions can be considered but you must stay true to yourself and what is right and best for your company. Sometimes telling people “no” can be difficult but sometimes very necessary.
What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
Seeing people wearing the tshirts is super rewarding. Also, hearing reactions to what the tees say and how people connect with it.
What is the website?
mimidre.etsy.com or mimidre.com
What ways can people learn more about what Mimidre is doing (listserv, newsletter, etc)?
Instagram and Facebook are the best ways to stay updated. IG and FB: MIMIDRE
